It is currently made up of 24 clubs and was introduced in the 2004–05 season as a rebrand of the former Football League First Division, which itself had been rebranded from the now-defunct Football League Second Division before the launch of the Premier League in 1992. The winning team of this division is awarded the EFL Championship trophy, previously known as the reward for the winners of the English top-flight before the Premier League's inception. It is worth noting that Welsh clubs can also participate in this division. At the end of each season, the top two clubs in the Championship are automatically promoted to the Premier League. Teams finishing in 3rd to 6th place undergo a playoff tournament, with the victor also earning promotion to the Premier League. On the other hand, the three lowest-ranking teams in the Championship are relegated to League One. The Championship stands out as the richest non-top-flight football division globally, the ninth wealthiest in Europe, and the 12th most attended league in world football, boasting the second-highest per-match attendance of any secondary league, just behind the German 2nd Bundesliga. The average match attendance for the 2022-23 season was 18,787. Cardiff City has the most appearances in this division, while Birmingham City currently holds the record for the longest ongoing tenure in the Championship, last missing out on the 2010-11 season. Barnsley was the first club to achieve 1,000 wins in the second-tier English league football, achieved through a 2-1 home victory over Coventry City on January 3, 2011. Furthermore, they were the first to reach 3,000 games in second-level English league football following another 2-1 victory at home, this time against Brighton & Hove Albion on March 12, 2013. (W1028, D747, L1224).
