Established in 1934, the club has previously competed under various names, including Musselburgh Bruntonians, Musselburgh Juniors, and Musselburgh Fern, tracing its origins back to 189. Affectionately known as "the Burgh," they host their home matches at Olivebank Arena in the Fisherrow neighborhood. The team's colors are blue and white, representing Musselburgh, with the town's emblem proudly displayed on their jerseys.
The club has made notable appearances in the Scottish Junior Cup finals in both the 2010–11 and 2014–15 seasons, where they faced Ayrshire’s Auchinleck Talbot and lost in close matches by 2–1. Currently, they compete in the East of Scotland League Premier Division, having transitioned from the SJFA East Region Premier League in 2018. In 2019, Musselburgh Athletic achieved victory in the South & East of Scotland Cup-Winners Shield, which enabled them to participate in the Scottish Cup for the first time during the 2020–21 season.
On October 30, 2023, the Olivebank Arena hosted a Scottish Cup match against three-time champions Clyde F.C., a game that was broadcast live by BBC Scotland—marking a significant milestone for the venue. Although the evening ended with Clyde narrowly claiming victory 3-2 after extra time, it was a memorable event for everyone associated with the club, creating a hopeful atmosphere for future broadcasts.
