Black Label Cup

In the past, it used to be a friendly match between the Soweto rivals, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. participating teams are selected through a voting process from the 16 Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams. Similar to the now-defunct Telkom Charity Cup, which featured four teams and required the semi-final winners to play twice in a day, the Black Label Cup consists of four teams. The winners of the initial matches play a second time, while the losing teams compete for the 3rd and 4th place in a penalty shootout. Fans participate in selecting the teams and line-ups by submitting unique codes found on Carling products, with the option to vote for substitutions during the games via text messages. In an interview conducted by South African football magazine Kick-Off in June 2011, Carling Black Label general manager Andrea Quaye revealed that the idea for the Black Label Cup was conceptualized in 2010, a year earlier than the Charity Cup's cancellation announcement. Quaye also mentioned that the competition was a collaboration between Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Ogilvy & Mather. The 2018 edition of the cup was called off due to the 2018 FIFA World Cup, while the 2020 edition faced cancellation as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2022 edition underwent a revamp by involving two additional teams alongside the traditional rivals, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Following fan votes, Mamelodi Sundowns from Pretoria and AmaZulu FC from Durban emerged as the top choices to fill the 3rd and 4th spots in the tournament.
