Established in 1871-72, it holds the distinction of being the oldest national football competition globally. The FA organizes and names the tournament, now officially named The Emirates FA Cup due to sponsorship by Emirates since 2015. A parallel Women's FA Cup has run since 1970. Clubs at various levels of the English football league system, down to Level 9, are eligible to participate in the competition. In cases where higher-tier clubs do not enter, Level 10 clubs serve as substitutes. The 2011-12 edition featured a record-breaking 763 participating clubs. The format includes 12 rounds of random draws, leading up to the semi-finals and final. While there is no seeding, byes ensure that higher-ranked teams enter at later stages. Teams may need to play between six to fourteen games to emerge victorious, depending on the point of entry. The first six rounds, known as the Qualifying Competition, involve clubs in the National League System (levels 5 to 10), commonly referred to as non-League clubs. The 32 winning teams from this phase advance to the first round of the main competition, where they face the initial 48 professional teams from Leagues One and Two. The final entrants comprise 20 Premier League and 24 Championship clubs, entering in the third round proper. Historically, only one non-League team has made it to the quarter-finals, and no team below Level 2 has reached the final, making underdog victories particularly notable. The victorious team is awarded the iconic FA Cup trophy, redesigned twice with five authentic cups in total. The latest iteration, a replica from 2014, follows the second design introduced in 1911. In addition to the trophy, winners earn a spot in the UEFA Europa League and a berth in the upcoming FA Community Shield. Arsenal holds the record with fourteen titles, the most recent being in 2020, with their former manager Arsène Wenger clinching the most successful status with seven final victories. Manchester City currently holds the title, having triumphed over local rivals Manchester United in the 2023 final.
