Established in the 1871-72 season, it holds the distinction of being the oldest national football competition globally. Managed by The Football Association (The FA), it was rebranded as The Emirates FA Cup in 2015 due to sponsorship from Emirates. Since 1970, a Women's FA Cup has been held concurrently. All eligible clubs up to Level 9 of the English football league system can participate in the competition, with Level 10 clubs stepping in if higher-level clubs do not enter. In the 2011-12 season, a record 763 clubs took part. The tournament comprises 12 rounds of random draws, culminating in the semi-finals and the final. Although there is no seeding of entrants, teams are given byes based on their league level, resulting in higher-ranked teams entering the competition in later rounds. Depending on the round of entry, teams must win a minimum of six to fourteen games to claim victory. The Qualifying Competition, the first six rounds of the tournament, welcomes clubs from levels 5 to 10 of the English football system, commonly referred to as non-League teams. Thirty-two of these teams advance to the Competition Proper's first round, where they face off against 48 professional teams from Leagues One and Two. The final entrants are the 20 Premier League and 24 Championship clubs, who join the draw in the third round proper. While only one non-League team has ever made it to the quarter-finals in the modern era, no team below Level 2 has reached the final. This spotlight on smaller teams, especially if they pull off unexpected upsets, adds an extra layer of excitement to the competition. Victors of the FA Cup not only earn bragging rights but also receive the iconic FA Cup trophy. With two designs and five actual cups awarded throughout its history, the most recent replica is based on the 1911 iteration. The winning team also secures a spot in the UEFA Europa League and a place in the upcoming FA Community Shield. Arsenal holds the record for the most wins, with fourteen titles, the latest in 2020, and their former manager Arsène Wenger holds the most successful record, having clinched seven titles with the team. Manchester City, the reigning champions, claimed victory over local rivals Manchester United in the 2023 final.
